What to Expect From Your First Pilates Class?

Have you signed up for your first Pilates class and are not sure what to expect? Or, are you putting off booking a class yet because the idea seems too daunting?

Wonder no more! Whether it’s your first time doing Pilates or you’re used to rolling out your mat at home, heading to any new exercise class can seem scary.

Pilates, Reformer and Barre classes are great spaces to learn new ways to exercise, make friends and get into a fitness routine. So we are here to get you prepped and excited for your first class.

We’ll cover what to expect, what to wear, workout tips and what to bring with you.

What Happens in a Pilates Class?

Pilates is a slow and controlled workout, focusing on smaller less-active muscle groups. And although it is a low-impact class you can expect to feel a very humbling burn!

Pilates targets the whole body with a focus on the ‘powerhouse’ core. You can expect to use your mind-to-muscle connection to target muscles in your legs, arms, abs, glutes and more.

To learn more about how Pilates workouts can help you, read our post here.

In Pilates class, we embrace all the shakes and trembles as we hold stretches for up to a minute and use a pulsing technique to really feel the burn. You will feel more lengthened, stretched and like you’ve just had the least relaxing massage ever.

Pilates aims to improve your flexibility, mobility, strength, and posture. It will take a few sessions to start feeling the benefits as you need to practice consistently, but after one class you should feel the glow. You should be proud of showing up for yourself!

What do I bring to my first Pilates class?

  • Towel
  • Mat
  • Waterbottle
  • Hair tie
  • Smile!

What do I wear to my first Pilates class?

  • Light sports bra
  • Stick to comfy, body-hugging clothing such as leggings and a tank top so you can move freely. Wear what you will feel most confident in but note that baggy tops could get in the way.
  • Pilates class is a no-shoes zone. Socks are optional (we love the Pilates grippy socks from Sweaty Betty).
  • Avoid clothing with zips, buckles or anything that could be uncomfortable on the mat.

How do I get the most out of the class?

Pilates is suitable for every body type and all abilities. This means that going at your own pace and listening to your body is the best way to show up in class. There is also a focus on mindfulness and breathing within Pilates class. So keep an open mind and try to connect to yourself and your muscles to feel each movement.

At Flow and Glow, we offer expert-led super fun Pilates, Reformer and Barre classes. From private 121 sessions to our warm and welcoming group classes - there is something for everyone.
